Trust God In Uncertain Times
Life in this world, no matter how good the times are, is always uncertain. If you’re on “top of the mountain” there still remains uncertainty. As Solomon said many times in the book of Ecclesiastes, “Vanity of vanity, all is vanity.” The Bible isn’t silent on the subject of trust. In fact, it’s mentioned approximately 149 times in the Bible (NASB). The word trust is defined as “to believe, to be convinced of something.” We trust our spouses, our employers or employees. We trust our friends. However, all of those we trust here can disappoint us.
As Christians, we trust God in all situations. The verb form of the New Testament word trust means “to believe, to be convinced of something.” In the Old Testament, the word carries the meaning of “to rely on, depend on.” Trusting God is one of the fundamental lifestyle characteristics of Christians. Matthew 6:25-33 defines the most common verses of Scripture we use concerning anxiety and worry about situations. Jesus said not to worry about tomorrow. In fact, when we worry, we are saying God is not able to control, use or care for the situation we find ourselves in.
I want you to consider some verses from the Old Testament that lay the foundation for why we trust God. Psalms 13:5 “But I have trusted in Your lovingkindness; My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.” Psalms 25:2 “O my God, in You I trust, Do not let me be ashamed; Do not let my enemies exult over me.” Psalms 28:7a “The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped.” Psalms 31:6 “I hate those who regard vain idols, But I trust in the Lord.” Psalms 31:14a “But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord.” Psalms 40:3-4 “He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the Lord. How blessed is the man who has made the Lord his trust, And has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood.”
Considering the verses of Psalms, we find it is imperative that a believer trusts in God. It does not matter the economic, socio-political, sickness, crisis or family trials that arise. Trusting in God is not subject to what you want to do. Do you believe that He is able to see you through it? Do you believe that God is using the current crisis, national or personal, to further His will and work things out for the good? In times of uncertainty, we have a sovereign, faithful, merciful and trustworthy God. He is not capable of failing. He cannot lie. He cannot change His mind. He cannot deceive. This is why we trust God in uncertain times. He is the only One who is stable, faithful and true.
Psalms 146:3 “Do not trust in princes, in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation.” The Psalmist understood this great truth. Man will disappoint. Kingdoms will fall. Man will become more and more corrupt. There is no salvation in governments, princes, kingdoms or nations. Psalms 118:8-9 “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.” Amen! I will take refuge in the Lord! He is my hiding place. He is my hope. In Him I will trust. There is no greater joy than knowing our Father is able to keep, provide, protect and deliver.
Friends, in this time of great uncertainty, trust in God. He is not silent nor dismayed. And in this crisis we currently face, He is aware and is using it for His glory and His good. Let’s rejoice that God has redeemed us. And let’s be used for His glory.
